The Third Season (1954)

Episodes #53 - #65

53. THROUGH THE TIME BARRIER
Did you notice that the frames of Sterling Holloway's glasses sometimes contained lenses and...sometimes did NOT!?

When Superman flies to an asteroid to find the metal "Carborium X," how nice that it so happened to be waiting for him just sitting on the asteroid's ledge. Everything else on the asteroid was sizzling, but not the metal. AND…Superman, when he flies back from the asteroid, says that he "dug" the metal out of the rock. Well, since it was waiting for him on that ledge—he didn't have to! (thanks Susan Schnitzer)

54. THE TALKING CLUE
When Ray is playing his tapes for Lois and Jimmy, he plays the sound of a Burglar Alarm going off. Watch just as Ray stops his machine: you can STILL hear the Alarm sound continue for a tiny bit.....!!

Clark is in Henderson's Office; as Bill gets a phone call and soon departs. Clark stays behind, changes to Superman and leaps out......... the Store Room window!! (stock-footage, of course).

Supe is once again covered in dust after crashing thru the wall to capture Claude James. The very next scene: NO dust.

Clark and Henderson gaze out at Metropolis thru Clark's Office window and Bill mentions about 'being a failure' (regarding Ray). George Reeves stumbles on his reply: "You haven't failed!! (If) It's all gonna work out; I'm sure". He added IF before IT'S.

An observation: McGurk talks Ray into taking all of his equipment to his 'Echo Canyon' hideout. As Ray is tearing off the tiny strips of tape, McGurk stops, turns around and appears to look for his 'mark' on the sound stage floor....!!

A question: We soon see Bill and Clark entering Ray's room and discovering Ray has left. Henderson says, "He didn't leave any notes --- I've looked around". He did NO 'looking around' in THIS scene. Are we to assume that he got there prior to Clark and 'looked around' then!?!?

As Clark is examining the two tiny strips of recording tape Ray left behind, we can see these strips are NO longer than 4 inches each. Yet, when Clark splices these strips onto a new reel and plays them, you'd have thought he'd spliced on a 50 foot section!!! The recording spins away and plays for a good 10 seconds of screen time!!!!

Prior to playing this tape, George again stumbles not once, but twice on the same line: "I thread the 2 little pieces on the beginning of a new RULE". (He should've said "I threaded...' and '....new REEL").

Clark plays this "Cannon and Hello" tape twice --- with the 'Cannon' preceding the 'Hello'. The first time, we hear the Cannon exploding 5 times. The second time: only 3......!?!?

A 'continuity' error: Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Clark and Henderson all take stabs at guessing what the sounds on the tape mean. Notice Jimmy's right hand; in the scenes with all 5 of them: he fiddles with the Lid of the Water or Coffee Pitcher on Perry's desk. Yet, in the scenes without Henderson, this hand is in his pocket....!!!!

The huge "boulder" Superman throws to stop McGurk's car almost too easily 'rolls' to a stop in front of it --- making it obvious the boulder is paper maché!!!

A few observations: When Ray is kidnapped by McGurk, he bends down and rips a few pieces of tape from his "extensive library". How could he locate the tapes with the sounds he wanted in a few seconds?? Also, if Inspector Henderson knew that McGurk had a "hideout" in Echo Canyon, why didn't the police look there BEFORE unscrambling the "talking" clue?? (thanks to Colin Duff).

55. THE LUCKY CAT
In the beginning, Mr. Botts talks to Clark and Jimmy. When we see them from behind (as they look at Botts), they are standing about 2 feet apart. When they are shown from a FRONT view, Jimmy is RIGHT next to and slightly BEHIND Kent....!!

Charlie King enters the house and --- in a distant shot --- has one hand on the door and the other is slightly bent. The VERY next --- close-up --- scene now has him with both hands in his jacket pockets!!

Bill Green is supposed to hop 13 times to the head of the table. If you start counting when he begins to hop until Superman 'saves' him (from the basement), enough time passed where he could have hopped about 48 times....!!!

Clark notices the sawed-thru floor support underneath Green; yet he NEVER looks down before making that statement. (How could he see that beam without looking down at or thru the floor??).

Notice that Green's almost to the head of the table when Superman braces the floor from below. When we next see him (after he falls), he's still in front of the table; as if he hadn't even reached it yet......!!

Charlie King writes (in the Ledger): "Charlie King lit 300 cigarettes this week on 100 matches". He appears to write this all on one line in the book. When he later goes back and reads this entry aloud, we can see this short blurb is now on five lines.....!?!?

Lois reaches down to the Cat and pulls her hand away; stating, "She tried to scratch me!!". You can clearly see the cat tried to bite her.... NOT scratch her!!

Not really a 'blooper'; but, watch the Hall Tree in the corner of Charlie King's Office --- when Superman lands thru his window: it starts to shake back and forth; moreso after George starts to run towards the door!! (an unsturdy sound stage floor!?).

A question: How did the door shut in the Basement; locking in Clark, Lois and Jimmy?? If you look behind that door; into the other room, you see NO movement of any kind. In fact, the space behind the door was TOO small for anyone to be hiding..... ready to slam the door. It almost magically shuts by itself.....!?!?

A few observations: How did Lois and Jimmy NOT suspect Clark was 'Superman' when he came into the basement room and said "Hi Jimmy" before actually entering the room ~ AND ~ when he knew Jimmy had a rabbit's foot and a 4-leaf clover in his pocket....!? Also, when Lois 'sees' these in Jimmy's pocket, his hand is still in there. How did she see them!?!?

56. SUPERMAN WEEK
Near the beginning; as Superman poses for the female Artist doing his portrait, note that the portrait is actually a painting (albeit well-done) of one of George's famous B&W "hands-on-hips" poses ........ from 1951!!! (This same original photo can be seen on the back cover of Michael Bifulco's 10th Anniversary edition of "Superman On Television").

When Perry enters Lois' office with the Guest List for the Dinner, Lois replies "I suppose you want me to call them all??". Perry replies "No, sorry, we haven't time to send out invitations." (say what!?!?).

57. GREAT CAESAR'S GHOST
As Superman plays a Ghost near the end, he calls the dead gangster both "Morley" and "Marley". (thanks to Gary L.).

A point to ponder: Clark (at home) is talking to Perry on the phone and his super-hearing can tell someone was using the elevator in the Planet building.  However, when he is moving Mr. White's heater, Clark doesn't hear Mr. White come back into the office and say (out-loud) that he must be going crazy. How could he not hear Perry coming back?  Maybe he was distracted..... (thanks to Brad "Skeeter" Cressley).

Another of those "Did this happen in other episodes??" ~ When Jimmy and Superman are outside Perry's house and Superman has donned that 'ghostly' Coat and Hat, he says to Jimmy, "Take the tape recorder and sneak into the Garden and I'll show you and the Chief what happens when one Ghost sees another." It was only Clark that called Perry "Chief" ------ NOT Superman!!! (thanks to George; aka: 'SupermanFan').

An Observation and an Inconsistency:

1) How did the Morley gang NOT see Superman's red boots; as he impersonated Morley's ghost?? WE can plainly see them; as he takes off for the roof. How did they not see them!?!

2) In this episode, Perry claims to use 2 lumps of sugar in his coffee. In #10 ("The Secret of Superman"), he takes his coffee black......!?

58. TEST OF A WARRIOR
As a blindfolded Jimmy stumbles thru the (supposedly dark) cave during 'Donaga', we see his shadow on the walls.....!?

A question: Superman uses sign language to Red Hawk; to ask him to divert his Tribe's attention for a few seconds --- while Supe makes his way to the tree. Isn't Superman "faster than a speeding bullet"....??? Would a 'Superman' really need this diversion???

When Superman is about to 'karate-chop' that large piece out of the tree to assist 'Great Horse', notice that the tree already has this piece "notched" out of it -- making it easier for George Reeves to complete his 'super-task'!!

Superman gets some sticks of dynamite; to set off and cause rain. As he's leaving the shed, he tucks the sticks into his Belt and leaves. We next see him taking off with NO dynamite sticks in his Belt....!? (a stock-footage take-off was used, of course).

From Ron Marcus--

1. As Red Hawk's father attempts to cut down the tree, all we see in the background is "blue sky" that appears to come right down to the ground. Shouldn't we be seeing some bushes and trees instead of the phony blue background?

2. Then, in that same scene, as Jimmy diverts the attention of the tribe, we see Superman run over to the tree. As he runs you can see his shadow cast on the "blue sky."

59. OLSEN'S MILLIONS
In the opening sequence, some letters/mail fall off the Phone Stand in Miss Peabody's apartment.

60. CLARK KENT, OUTLAW
A 'continuity' error: After the tear gas is in their shack, Foster leaves and is 3 steps outside the door when the scene cuts back to Clark, etc. A line or two of dialogue is spoken by them; which should've allowed Foster time for a few MORE steps outside. The very next scene shows Foster JUST exiting the door.......!?!?

After Foster (John Doucette) puts the money in the glove compartment of Kent's car, he first calls Insp. Henderson "LT." ---- then he calls him "INSP.".......!! (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

Clark appears to be in cahoots with Foster and Curtis and Henderson says, "Look, as a friend, I'd like to give you every break I can, but, ah, there's the money and all of us as WITNESS". (He should have used the word "witnesses" --- plural).

When Kent is listening to the tumblers in the wall safe; with Foster and Curtis, the 'close-up' shot of Clark's ear reveals he is NOT wearing his glasses!! (thanks to Randy Garrett).

Wingate gets the phony 'Police' phone call regarding his Office being robbed. Note that he has NO wedding ring on. Once in the phony Hospital room, his wedding ring is now on......!?!? Why would a man -- rushing to get to his Office -- bother to take extra time to get his ring???

Superman lands at the "Empire Diamond Mines, Ltd." and we hear the wooden 'thump' of the sound-stage floor!!!

Look closely at his Cape as he lands at the mining office; to ask to borrow the stones. The "S" insignia is MISSING!!! (I guess this must be the "B" suit, because the "A" suit was at the cleaners.....). (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

Watch Supe JUST as he's about to exit the Mine (after digging the diamonds). He starts to go forwards.... or, further into the Mine. He then abruptly turns and heads out.......!?

Once again, the old "dust on uniform" (sleeve) in the Mine and then NO dust outside.

Outside the Mine, Supe acts as if he's tucking the Diamonds under his Belt Buckle; into his red trunks. Yet, as he prepares for his take-off, we can see absolutely NO 'bulge' of ANY Diamonds in his pants!?!? (When Clark hands over these Diamonds to Stoddard, they're a good-sized handful; in his Hanky).

Watch George's eyes; as he makes his take-off from the Mines. His eyes continually look DOWN..... at the Springboard!!!

We see Clark - who is pretending to be part of the gang - heading towards Perry's Office; accompanied by Jimmy, Lois and Curtis (Sid Tomack). Clark then opens Perry's door slightly and says that he is "disabling a Burglar Alarm".  The next scene shows a 'medium' shot of the inside Perry's office and ...... there is NO Alarm to be seen!! (unless it's on the wall; beyond the door. And, if it IS, Clark would have to have 10 foot-long forearms!!!). (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

As Clark first starts to cut into Perry's Office chair, note that his left leg is bent and away from the chair. A quick 'cut' shows BOTH of his legs are now straight and up against the chair!

Also, notice the chair stuffing and papers that Clark piles up on this chair: as he finishes, you can see some of the stuffing is on the right chair arm. When he goes to light it afire shortly afterwards, the amount of 'debris' on the chair has lessened and there's NO stuffing on this arm.....!?!?

In that phony Hospital room, Stoddard forces Perry to take a sleeping pill and, in a fast 8 seconds, Perry is miraculously asleep!!! (It must've been strong enough to knock out 22 Elephants.....!!!).

You can hear the embarrassing 'clatter' of the Springboard; just after Supe takes-off in the end.

61. THE MAGIC NECKLACE

There are no BLOOPERS recorded for this episode!

62. THE BULLY OF DRY GULCH

At about 16:44 into this episode, Jimmy Olsen sticks his head out of  a doorway saying with great seriousness,  "... come out now?" Then, with a sudden smile, he turns and greets Lois and Clark. It appears to me as though this was a poorly edited sequence and his question seems to suggest that he was asking the director  or other production personnel about his cue. (James D'Angelo)

If you watch the scene where Jimmy (in his new cowboy suit) is standing in the street you’ll see the same gray-haired woman walk by him moving in the same direction and position only seconds apart. (Bruce Dettman)

63. FLIGHT TO THE NORTH
The Desk Clerk (George Chandler) holds the bent crowbar in both hands in one shot. The angle of the shot immediately changes and his left arm now rests on the desk and right arm hangs down; out of full camera range.

'Leftover' Louie grabs Kent in his Office; which badly rumples his Suit jacket. The next (close-up) shot of Clark ---- NO rumples!? The jacket appears freshly dry cleaned......!!

As Louie exits Steve's Cabin; with pie in tow, he shuts the door, we hear the 'engine' sounds, Steve looks out his door and into the sky!!! Now, how did Louie take-off and become airborne in literally 2 seconds??

Shortly afterwards, Supe exits the Cabin, closes the door and we hear his 'take-off' sound; followed by his 'flying' sound. THEN, Sylvester looks out the door and says, "He just jumped in the air and kept on goin'....!!" He did NOT see Superman take-off. He was already flying by the time Sylvester looked out......!!!

Louie is in the enclosed Cave ----- and casting not one, but TWO shadows...!?

Superman crashes through the icy Cave and is covered in 'dust' --- including a large amount in his hair. Next scene: dust (while still present) has been visibly cleaned off his Uniform and his hair is now dust-free and neatly combed, too!!

64. THE SEVEN SOUVENIRS
Mr. Willy writes out a sign to put in his window; advertising 'Superman Souvenirs'. However, the sign he initially writes (see it quickly; at an angle) is MUCH sloppier than the finished sign we see in the window!!

65. KING FOR A DAY
The 'tainted' Ice Cream Soda looks like a Shake when it's handed to Jimmy.  As it sits on the table, it looks more like Strawberry Soda; with Ice Cream floating on the top.  When Clark drinks it down, it again looks like a Shake......!?!? (thanks to Brad Cressley).
