The First Season (1951)

Episodes #1 - #26

1. SUPERMAN ON EARTH
Rozan, the Council Leader of Krypton pronounces it "Kryp-TIN". Jor-el pronounces it "Kryp-TAWN".

When Sarah and Eben Kent stop their car to get the infant Kal-el, notice the background behind Sarah; as she stands by the car. This SAME 'trees' BG is used in "The Evil Three"; although it's made to appear as a 'night' scene -- where Supe and the Colonel talk.

An observation: If both Kal-el (Clark) AND the blankets he was wrapped in survived the flight from Krypton and the burning fires of the crash, why didn't the Rocket itself survive....!?!? (thanks to Jeff Minich).

Another observation: Clark's mother tells him she made a costume 'out of the blanket he was wrapped in'. Says 'nothing can hurt it'. I wonder what she used to cut and sew it with ?? (thanks to James Baker).

As Clark kisses his Mother goodbye at the Bus Depot, his right arm is at his side. As this kissing scene cuts to a slightly more 'distant' shot, we NOW see Clark's right hand holding his Mother's arm.

As we see Kent leaving the Receptionist's area (which appears to be in the 'open'), we HEAR a door slam (!?); as he heads to the Store Room to walk that ledge into Perry's Office. This scene is actually 'stock footage' of Kent leaving Lois's Office and closing her door behind him.

Also, he has NO Hat on as he leaves; yet his Hat is ON after he leaves. (the stock footage from above).

A 'continuity' error: In a 'distant' shot'; as Lois reads aloud the newsflash about the Dirigible, we see Perry at his desk --- hands empty. When the scene cuts to just him; barking orders, he NOW is holding his glasses....!? Next, the same, more 'distant' shot as earlier shows him again with NO glasses.....!?

As Superman exits the Store Room, we see that 'stock-footage' "Human Bomb"/dynamite leap out the window.

As Dabbs Greer lets go of the rope, notice that he does NOT drop straight down --- he actually lands and then rolls forward onto the sound stage floor....!!! Superman clearly catches a 'dummy' in mid-air; NOT Dabbs Greer!!

Dabbs Greer---Who coins the term "Super Guy" receives no screen credit in the closing. (Jimmy Barnes)

2. THE HAUNTED LIGHTHOUSE
We see both "Mrs. Carmody's" and the door's shadows on the backdrop; as she first exits the house.

As Superman lands on Moose Island; near the cave, the 'flying' sound continues a second or two AFTER he lands.

When Superman exits the cave - carrying an unconscious Jimmy - his uniform is quite wet. Yet, it appears bone-dry as he lays Jimmy down by a boulder; just seconds later!!

In "The Haunted Lighthouse, Jimmy has two samples of his Aunt Louisa's handwriting in his wallet. The only trouble , he's underwater!!! Yet...when hi shows them to Superman, they're nice and crispy fresh and dry! Not even a smudge!! LOL! Janet gets an assist. She brought it up on Dave's message board, but it's always bugged me too. It's great to have those bloopers back my friend. (Mike G.)

In The Haunted Lighthouse when Mack attacks Superman with a rock on a cliff - we see a jump cut edit in the film with about 8 frames missing.  On the commentary audio track provided on the 2005 DVD this is erroneously attributed to an edit in which the stunt man is replaced by George Reeves.  This assertion is completely incorrect in that we can clearly see George's face prior to the missing frames meaning the edit is for a different purpose . . .

Here is what really happens... Mack charges at Superman with the boulder raised above his own head as Superman steps aside.  Mack launches the fake rock skyward and out of the film frame as he heads for his fall over the cliff.  One frame before the edit you can see the rock re-enter the top of the film frame and then after the edit it is completely missing - having perhaps actually bounced off of the top of Mack's head or shoulder and then over the cliff, destroying the realism of the shot with its obvious low weight.

Best - Ted Knapp, Enumclaw, WA

3. THE CASE OF THE TALKATIVE DUMMY
As Lois, Jimmy and Clark are seated in the Theatre at the beginning, notice the Boom Mike shadow at the top of the screen ~ as it moves with whomever is speaking.

When Mr. Green asks Jimmy for his name, he replies "James Bartholomew Olsen". But, in "Jimmy Olsen, Boy Editor" (#48 from 1953), his middle initial on the name plate to Perry White's Office has changed to "J".....??. (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

Note the light on Jimmy and the shadow it casts .......... INSIDE the darkened Safe!?!?

The safe containing Jimmy appears to hang in mid-air; just prior to Superman catching it.

Superman sees through lead twice: he sees Jimmy locked in the Safe and, later, the money in Green's wall Safe (assuming both Safe's were made of lead).

Watch the top left of your TV screen; as Harry Green (Pierre Watkin) heads to his wall Safe near the end. You can see the shadow of a Boom Mike move with him!

At the end, Inspector Henderson is on the phone with Perry. As we SEE Henderson, he has NO hat on. However, as the camera cuts to Clark and Lois, Henderson's shadow on the wall HAS a hat on!?

There are scenes where Inspector Henderson has grey (dyed) temples and scenes where he does not. (Jim Amash)

4. MYSTERY OF THE BROKEN STATUES
An observation: The shop where Lois bought the cuRico is close to Harry Green's headquarters in "The Case of the Talkative Dummy." (thanks to Jim Nolt).

In both this show and "The Case of the Talkative Dummy," the camera is aimed higher than usual in Lois/Clark's office; and we can see the top of that corrugated wall. (thanks to Jim Nolt).

In the scene where Lois comes out of the shop carrying a lot of statues, Tris Coffin and Phil Pine are watching from their car, when (unseen) you hear a voice say: "That's the dame, Boss." Now, supposedly, it was Phil Pine saying that; but, when he DID speak a little later, with the camera on him, his voice was totally different!! (thanks to Philip Pitta).

Clark's chalk breaks; as he writes when solving the 'rebus'. (It appears that Robert Shayne looks towards the floor; where the chalk lands).

In "Mystery of the Broken Statues" near the end of the episode (19min 38sec onward)  Lois Lane is bundled into an airplane by her abductors. The airplane has a distinctive tailplane, with two vertical fins (photo 01). This is followed by scenes of Superman flying, a close view of an aircraft engine and a controller in the control tower (smoking!). We then see the airplane rushing down the runway, the tailplane now has a single vertical fin. Note that the vertical fin's trailing edge is straight (photo 02). We then see Superman preventing the takeoff by grabbing the tailplane and pulling the plane to a halt—Note that the tailplane has a single vertical fin, but now its trailing edge is curved (photo 3). One 'plane - three different tailplanes? I don't think so!

Warmest Regards, Henry Burek

5. THE MONKEY MYSTERY
Near the beginning, the Nazi-looking Captain's voice suddenly changes pitch in mid-sentence; while talking on the phone.

As Harold Crane (Michael Vallon) says "On your way, Pepe" and Pepe jumps out of the window; heading for the drainpipe, we hear the "thump" of the studio floor that Pepe actually landed on.

Hey Carl, I'm looking at "The Monkey Mystery" right now, and look at the scene where the organ grinder sends the monkey up the drainpipe to deliver the message.  Watch when the guy goes over to the window after he points the gun at the monkey (what a cute little guy) walks to the window and watch the right hand side of the screen, something is superimposed there covering the window for some reason, even has a number 4 written on it. (Ray Duke)

Also earlier when the secret police guy is telling someone on the other end of the phone about the contact in Metropolis his voice is dubbed in on the words "and tell him I am leaving for Metropolis tonight by plane" for some reason.  (Ray Duke)

Was watching "The Monkey Mystery" last night and caught two bloopers.  The first one takes place in the alley where Max and Jimmy Olsen are fighting over Pepe.  When Max delivers an uppercut to Jimmy, he falls back against a brick wall in the alley.  Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, I swear that brick wall flexed and moved.  The second blooper is more of a continuity issue.  The train that Lois and Jan Moleska are on is being pulled by Southern Pacific locomotive #4312.  Note the round shape of the tender, which is designed to hold a liquid fuel - oil, in this case.  Now, the train Superman is chasing, from the aerial view, has a rectangular tender, indicating a solid fuel, such as coal or wood.  By the way, that clip of the Southern Pacific #4312 was taken in Glendale prior to 1941.  That area was very popular for train photographers and is parallel to San Fernando Road, north of the Glendale station.  By 1941, that locomotive had an external modification installed which would be very visible.  (Vince Marzo)

6. NIGHT OF TERROR
As Oscar enters Kent's office for a cleaning, he leans his broom against the wall ~ which is obviously just some sort of FABRIC stretched out to LOOK like a wall; as it "gives" or bends when the handle is leaned on it. (cheap budgets!!).

Kent rudely hustles Miss Bachrach out of his Office, changes into Superman and leaps out the window. If you watch carefully, you will notice a flying shot that runs a little too long. Superman's cape stops flapping in freeze-frame; before the clouds stop zooming by in the background!! (thanks to Michael J. Bifulco's "Superman On Television" book).

As Superman is searching the Motels for Lois, the first Motel he goes to, he speaks to the 2 owners. Yet, his lips appear only to move on the LAST few words of his dialogue!!

Superman thrashes the "bad guys" at the very end. Listen to the 'audio' just after "Baby Face Stevens" is decked ~ you can hear him say (off-camera) "Oh, G*d Damnit".....!!! (I can't recall if it was Jim Nolt who told me of this; or if I read it in one of his "TAC" issues).

*** When Miss Bachrach puts Jimmy's note on Clark's Desk, she puts in in the upper LEFT hand corner of Clark's Desk Pad.  In the very next (close-up) scene, we now see the note more in the CENTER of the Desk Pad............ just before it "blows" to the Floor. (Don Holmes)

*** This same note is fairly small - maybe 3 x 5 - when Jimmy writes it & Miss Bachrach then reads it.......... before placing it on Clark's Desk.  Once it falls to the Floor......... before Oscar picks it up......... it appears larger & now is even folded in half!! (Don Holmes)

7. THE BIRTHDAY LETTER
Before Lois and the crooks are seen in the William's apartment, there is a brief 'establishing' shot of the exterior of the apartment. It is a quick pan; but you can see Palm Trees and notice the bright California sky. I do not recall too many indications in the series that so clearly define the "Hollywood" locale.....!! (thanks to Tim "TJ" James).

A 'puzzling' observation: When Marcel and Marie go back to Cathy's apartment to get her doll, they do NOT have to break in; and they do NOT bother to knock. They just walk in!?!? Keep in mind Mrs. Williams' daughter had been kidnapped the day before, but she is nowhere to be found. You'd think she would be glued to the phone at her house; awaiting the kidnapper's call. If that wasn't silly enough, while they are in the apartment, Lois Lane shows up. Like the rude crooks before her, she just barges right in the apartment without a knock or door bell ring. (thanks to Tim "TJ" James).

Superman's cape knocks over a pillow on Cathy William's couch; as he flies into her window near the end.

In "The Birthday Letter," and "A Ghost For Scotland Yard," and probably other episodes as well, we see one of the characters reading a Superman comic book!  What is wrong with that, you ask?  In the comic book world, Clark Kent was repeatedly changing into his secret identity of Superman.  Yet in the "real world," none of us know his secret identity!  How then could there be a comic book about a man with a secret identity if no one knows his secret identity? (Blooperman)

Coincidence? In Marcel and Marie's mug shots they are wearing the exact same clothes they are wearing throughout the episode.  (Kevin Thompson)

8. THE MIND MACHINE
When Clark and Hadley (Steve Carr) take off in the Doctor's private plane (referred to as a C147 - a transport plane of the time), the stock footage used is of an "American Airlines" plane!! Maybe the good Doc bought it off of them? (thanks to Armand Vaquer).

Watch Hadley in the plane ~ JUST before Clark throws his knock-out punch. He reacts to the punch a split-second BEFORE Clark throws it......!! (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

In the end fight scene, watch Ben Welden; after he is pushed backwards by Supe. His head actually hits the edge of a table and he immediately grabs at it ........ obviously NOT in the script.....!!!

ALL of the following for this episode were discovered by Robert Harvey:

When Lois testifies before Senator Taylor, her dialogue comes from her first scene in the episode: "If you only knew what that man controls....".

George steadies Dr. Stanton with his right arm in the long shot; eventually dropping his arm. When a cut is made to a closer shot, George's right arm is still supporting the doctor!

As we see Hadley (Steve Carr) unconscious in the cockpit of the plane as it falls, the camera is shooting beyond the left edge of the rear projection screen in use; showing some dark space.

When Al takes the machine out of Dr. Stanton's lab, it obviously weighs virtually nothing; given how easily he moves it.

As Steve Carr crosses to the Lab window, the shadow of the crew's equipment can be seen on the shelves.

As Steve looks out the window he sees Ace, Candy & Connie (from THE STOLEN COSTUME) drive away!!!

As George talks to Steve Carr in Clark's office, his arms change position from shot to shot when Steve says "I thought........".

Not really a mistake, but how is the machine able to obtain picture and sound of its victims?

Notice how to give the cars and the bus a little more "energy", the footage is sometimes "speeded up".

As Lois and Clark get out of her car, she says "C'mon Clark", points, then says something more ("Look!" perhaps); but her voice isn't heard!!

Watch Superman's legs droop in the first liftoff; as the stuntman crosses to frame left.

In some shots, the bus is only carrying Mr. Wagner (NO kids).

Notice how slowly the bus is moving (compared to the previous shot); when it rounds a curve and nears Superman - who has just landed in the road.

Not an error, but notice the curious examination of Superman by the bus driver; once the bus has been stopped.

After saving the school children, Superman flies away (fast and far, as shown); forgetting ALL about Clark "taking care of that poor woman back there in the car".

As Clark leaves Perry's office to go speak to Senator Taylor, we hear Perry say, "I hope"; as Clark reaches for the doorknob. We then cut to a close shot of Perry who says the whole line, "I hope it does some good".

When George is in the plane with Steve Carr, look closely at George's left cheek and notice....... pimples or poorly applied makeup...!?

When the radar blips merge on the plane's equipment, the 'mind machine's' panel and scope are shown.

(Geez, Robert--one of the best episodes of the series and you just made mince-meat of it!!!    --- LOL).

During the fight scene between Superman and Kranek and his goons, George's stunt double's hair is messed up, but in the close-ups, George's hair is as neat as always. (Gary Labrum)

In a dirt lot, in the runaway bus scene, when Superman takes off from the ground, you can clearly see his supporting wires. (John M. Rico)

9. RESCUE
The newspaper (from "The Stolen Costume") that Clark looks at up close is NOT the same paper that he takes into his car. (You have to look closely at the headlines; as he puts it down on his seat .... it appears to have a TWO sentence headline; as compared to the ONE line "Rope Burglar Defies Police" we see up-close).

As the burning piece of paper gets closer to the gas-filled hole, we can see a very thin "wire" PULLING the paper towards the hole!!

Lois "smells" the gas and then we "see" it escaping from between the rocks. Well, the 'rotten egg smell' that we all notice is intentionally put in the gas by the company that harvests the gas. In its natural state, gas is both odorless and clear. In other words, we can't smell OR see it...!!! (that's why miners would always bring a bird with them in the mines --- if the bird 'croaked', it was time to make a hasty retreat...!!) (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

An observation: Being a car buff all my life, I tend to notice cars --- and things about cars --- perhaps more than someone that just uses a car for everyday transportation. There is NO doubt that the white 1951 Chrysler convertible that Clark uses in this episode and 'The Deserted Village' is the same one that Dan Seymour uses in 'The Stolen Costume'.  There are a few vague shots of the front number plate from all the episodes; and, even though they are not sharp and clear, you can make out that it is the same plate....!!  (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

In the scene following the cave-in, where Lois is being rebuffed by the mine inspector trying to get permission to enter the mine, just before she sneaks in: You can see when he is talking, for some reason the voice is badly synched with the action; his lips are not following the dialogue.  I wonder if this is just an error in the DVD transfer, or if the original film was like this. (? by John M. Rico)

10. THE SECRET OF SUPERMAN
This would seem to be more of an inconsistency throughout the series: In this episode, Perry White says that he takes his coffee black. In the 'Money to Burn' episode, Lois mentions that he never drinks coffee. However, in the 'Great Caesar's Ghost' episode, he says he takes 2 lumps of sugar in his coffee.....!? It seems that Mr. White's preference in coffee has gone from black --to sugar-- to not drinking coffee at all...!?! (thanks to Charles Kim).

When Ort is with Perry at the News Club, two points: when Perry "drinks" the coffee, it's obvious that there is nothing in the coffee cup!! Notice that he NEVER swallows. Secondly, when he drops the cup.......it is empty!!! You don't drink a whole cup with one swallow...(even though Perry didn't even do THAT). (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

After Dr. Ort slips the truth serum in Perry's coffee, he shows him a File and asks him if he ever saw it before. Perry answers that it's his File on Superman ----- BUT, his eyes never look at the file. They continue to stare straight ahead!!!

Since when does a reporter (Kent) get access to the police lab BEFORE the police??? Remember, it's Kent who is on the phone with the lab when they are trying to figure out what the drug was!! (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

A few 'continuity' errors: A 'jobless' Clark wanders the streets of Metropolis and stops long enough to get a Coffee and a couple of Doughnuts from Sam. Ort's accomplice drops a tablet of 'truth serum' in Clark's cup; which Jimmy points out to the cop who'd been tailing him. As they run across the street to warn him, we see Clark already has the Coffee almost up to his mouth. In the very next (more close-up) scene, Kent is just beginning to raise up his cup....!?!

Dr. Ort pours a Ginger Ale for a thirsty Kent. We even see the foam and fizzle at the top of the glass as he pours. Again, in the very next (close-up) scene, this 'Ginger Ale' appears to be flat; with NO fizzle at all.

An observation: As Lois pours her own Coffee in Ort's house, she looks down at the Coffee and Ort looks at her..... yet, he makes the comment "Charming picture"....!?!? If he's referring to that portrait on the wall, it's behind both of them and, again, NO one is even looking at it.....!?!? An odd comment.....

11. NO HOLDS BARRED
The newspaper headlines show two different spellings for the same wrestler. In one headline, it's "Two Ton Tony" and in another, it's "Teuton Tony." (thanks to Gary L.).

(Unconvincing) stunt doubles are used in the 'distant' shots of Brannigan, the "Golden Adonis" and Wayne Winchester in the Ring.

There are 2 'night' scenes in Perry's Office where the shadow of the Boom Mike's are seen --- at the top of those 'infamous' corrugated fiberglass panels!!

As Clark is seen observing the poster on the brick wall of 'Murray's Gym', Sam Bleaker comes out and says, "Hi ya, Clarkie"; to which Clark replies, "Hi ya, Sam". Sam then replies, "Oh, pretty good".....!?!? (I believe Sam thought Clark asked him, "How are you, Sam??").

In the scene when the crooks are hustling back to the car to go back to Murray's place, they look NOTHING like the crooks in the previous scene and, in fact, one of them (the driver, I believe) is wearing a ten gallon tall hat!!! In the previous scene, that hat was no where to be seen. They almost look like circus characters. (thanks to Peter Nardelli).

As the crooks head back to Mortimer Murray's place, there we see an overhead shot of the car pulling up to the curb.

If you look closely, you'll see that the film was reversed -- the steering wheel is on the right hand side!

Also, just before the scene ends, this car with the steering wheel on the wrong side begins to roll backwards! The parking brake was not set!! (thanks to Roy Stuts for both of these).

An observation: Near the end, Superman comes thru the door, says, "The Party's Over, Boys!!" and leaps over the railing; into a big brawl. Someone is heard to say, "It's Superman!!" To MY ears, this sounds like the exact same 2 words merely dubbed in from the Series Intro!!. (also, George's stunt double used in some of these 'brawl' shots appears to be George Fisher).

I have just read the bloopers page of the first season of "TAOS" and I read that you thought that in the scene in the episode, "No Holds Barred," just before the big brawl between Superman and the bad guys the voice that shouted "It's Superman!" was the same one used in the intro.  I am writing to tell you it is not.  I have the first season DVD set and I saw that episode.  That voice belonged to Murray (Herb Virgran).  I even saw his jaw move as he said that even though his head was turned.  I just thought you'd like to know. (Kevin Thompson).

12. THE DESERTED VILLAGE
At the beginning, when Alvin Godfrey (dressed in that strange suit) throws rocks through windows, it looks like there is NO glass breaking --- only a rock being thrown through an open or missing window and the sound of breaking glass in both the windows he breaks. Also, there is no reflection in those windows --- only in the 'long shot'; further down the street. (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

Lois' nurse is sometimes called "Miss" Tazey and sometimes "Mrs." Tazey. (thanks to Gary L.).

When Alvin (Malcolm Mealy) enters the cave in the protective suit and hood, notice him bumping his head on the cave ceiling. You can actually HEAR the noise it made when the contact was made. (thanks to Tim "TJ" James).

In "The Deserted Village," when Lois and Clark are about to leave the cave, Clark has the pieces of drill core in his hand.  But in the scene where they are actually walking out of the cave, Clark is empty handed!  Yet in the scene at the opening of the cave, the drill core pieces are in Clark's hand once again!  In every episode involving a cave scene, it's always the same cave!  (Blooperman)

13. THE STOLEN COSTUME
Not an 'error', but one of the newspapers in the beginning montage (with the headline "Rope Burglar Defies Police") is also seen in #9 - "Rescue"; as Kent picks up a paper on the street.

At the beginning, notice the close-up shot of Clark's 'Superman' shirt in the closet; as "T-Ball" shines his flashlight on it. It's sort of spread-out; where we can see the "S" emblem perfectly. When it goes to a more distant shot of the uniform hanging there, the shirt itself is more wrinkled or 'scrunched' together.

In The Stolen Costume, the jersey shown in the long shot of T-Ball shining the flashlight into the closet is only gathered, rather than spread out - it's not even the same shirt.  Check the slope of the "S" in the middle, but appears to be perfectly horizontal.  If the two were the same shirt, the slackening of the fabric would only increase the slope of the "S," not make it look more horizontal.  This is only my opinion, as others have semi-challenged me on this point.  Look closely at the two freeze-frames, and you will see what I mean.  (Jody McGhee)

A question: When Ace and Connie go to pick up "Kent" ~ who they have determined is really Superman ~ and, they accidentally pick up "Candy", why then do they force "Superman" into their car with a GUN??? (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

The Planet headline reads, "Entire Force Alerted For Rope Burglar."  Underneath it says, "State Wide Road Blocks Set Up."  Why?  For a guy who travels on foot?  (Jimmy Barnes)

From Mike Goldman--Take a look at the vase on the left DURING and then after the blast!

How can a small vase stand up while a hole is being blown in the wall?

14. TREASURE OF THE INCAS
After Anselmo dumps Lois and Jimmy in the wasteland near Madira, he jumps back in his car and it appears we can see two banks of Set Lights reflected in his passenger door.

An observation: Notice the small 'hole' in the rocks where Anselmo places the stick of dynamite: at first, it appears more 'rectangular' looking; and then it's 'round' --- as he places the dynamite into it!?

This stick of dynamite was placed half-way into the hole in the rocks. Yet, when we see it close-up (as the wick burns away), it's suddenly laying out in the open; surrounded by nothing!? (Did you notice that the stick and its' wick combined to form an "S" shape?? Deliberate!?).

In the dynamite scene that you refer to in your bloopers, I noticed this...The first time they show the dynamite after it is lit, there are three sticks.  The next time they show it, there is only one stick! (Thanks Ron Marcus!)

15. DOUBLE TROUBLE
As in #19, we hear a landing sound as Superman takes off.

As Superman walks thru the train, the Porter pokes his head out of a compartment and says "Great day in the mornin'!!" ~ but his lips don't move!

Dr. Rudolf Albrecht's name plate on his door reads "Dr. H. Albrecht".

16. MYSTERY IN WAX
Newspaper says "...4th Victim...." when it's really the 3rd. At end, paper lists "5 Suicides"; when it is actually 4.

When Madame Selena predicts Dr. John Hurley's death in the beginning, Hurley wears a dark suit; as he reacts in horror to seeing his 'death figure'. But, just prior to his reaction; as the camera is on Selena, there is NO person in the audience with this dark suit.......!?!?

With Clark, Perry and Lois in attendance, as Madame Selena is about to announce her next victim, we see that Perry has a BLACK coat on (from the front view). When we see the 3 of them from behind, Perry (his double) now has on a GREY coat and his hair is dark in the middle.

When we see Perry behind the Bars in Selena's basement, notice when he grabs these Bars, they..........BEND!! (obviously made of some sort of rubber).

I just now watched "Mystery In Wax," and here's a great one for you!  In Madame Selena's Hall of Death we find wax statues of all the people who "died," along with a voice recording from each person telling how he died.  Question:  If all of these men are supposed to be dead, where did their voice recordings come from? (Blooperman)

17. THE RUNAWAY ROBOT
When the crooks are ready to bring "Hero" back from his crime spree, Chopper (Russell Johnson) says "Now, get him back here fast!!". As he says these words, we see the shadow of a man (cameraman??) in the window behind them.

Horatio Hinkle operates the robot and should only see what the robot sees, via a monitor remotely linked to the robot's eyes. However, there are many scenes on Hinkle's monitor that show rear views, side views, and also the robot walking towards a non-existent camera. (Guy Chiapparino)

On the top floor of an empty building, as the crooks are operating the remote controls of the robot, you can see the shadow of a stagehand in the background through the big windows.  The stagehand shadow scene, can be seen right after it shows the robot inside the bank vault. (Bill W.)

How is Horatio Hinkle able to see Hero the Robot on his TV screen?  There were no satellites back then! (Jimmy Barnes)

The sound Horatio makes opening and closing the back of Hero is the exact same sound Clark made opening up the vault in the dark in "Double Trouble."  (Jimmy Barnes)

18. DRUMS OF DEATH
In the first scene, after Clark and Perry watch the film of the Voodoo doctor, notice the upper left corner of the screen as their conversation continues. You can see the tops of the wall and the 'corrugated metal' sections in Perry's Office --- which should just continue up and out of view. (thanks to Gary L.).

When Johnson looks at a photo of "Legvu", the close-up of this photo IS of Johnson in his "Legvu" disguise. But, as he puts the photo down on a table, the photo now appears to be of a man in a suit...!! (use your 'slow-motion' button ~ this happens fast!!).

As Superman flies out of a Haitian window, we recognize this window as from the Daily Planet; and we see Perry coming into the scene; just as it 'dissolves' into the next scene. (This scene is actually from "The Human Bomb"; when Superman was taking off with the stick of dynamite ~ as Perry followed him to the window). In this particular scene from Haiti, Perry was nowhere to be found!!

At the end; when Superman is exposing Legvu by wiping the greasepaint off of him, Perry exclaims, "It's Johnson!!"; even though Legvu's face is still completely covered, since Supe did little more than smear the black makeup around a bit.  Perhaps they should've put a bit of cold cream on the rag he was using.  (thanks to Jeff Schwartz).

Carefully watch the scenes (use slow-motion) showing the moving wall that is closing in on Jimmy, Perry, and Miss White. It moves backward and forward in time, between the pulling of the lever and Superman's rescue scene. (Thanks to Guy Chiapparino)

The Haitian government plane that Kent and Bergeré fly to Port-au-Prince has an American flag, 48 stars, on the tail! (Thank you Mr X)

In "Drums of Death," not only do the bars of the jail cell easily break when Superman rescues Perry White and his sister, but the bars actually fall back like they were made of licorice!  (David James "D.J." Fone)

19. THE EVIL THREE
An error or an inconsistency? In the beginning, Perry shows Jimmy on a map where they are and where they are going.  Keeping in mind that certain things on maps can be very small (we do not see what is on the map), but Perry does not use any glasses.  A few minutes later, when Perry is about to sign in the Register Book (at the "Bayou Hotel"), he now needs to use his glasses! (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

When the Colonel takes Perry's car and throws it over the cliff, notice that all he does is simply move a lever from the steering column down and........ away goes the car!! He does this from the outside.  Having driven stick shifts all my life, you would have to depress the clutch for this to happen....... and, even if you could force the shift into gear, it would stall.  It could not be an 'automatic', since it was too old for that. (thanks to Tom Chenevert).

As Superman leaps out of the Daily Planet window, we hear his "landing" sound effect.

When Superman talks to the Colonel in the woods, we see a "splice" or "skip" in the rear-projected scene of trees.

When Superman takes off after leaving the Colonel in the woods, we see his Springboard pop up into the cameras view; at the bottom of your screen. (This happens in various 1951 episodes; depending on the 'cropping' of the print containing this same take-off).

Jimmy and Mr. White easily slide the giant rock in the basement. Obviously a phony rock. (Thanks to Guy Chiapparino)

20. RIDDLE OF THE CHINESE JADE
Watch for scenes of Harry Wong with the bamboo dust particles (from the Jade box) on his Jacket. In the close-up shots, he appears to have MORE particles on his jacket.

As Gloria Saunders (with the Jade) tries to escape the room she's being held captive, she runs to the door and stops there. However, the next scene cuts to Lu Sung and Greer fighting; as Greer sees Gloria trying to escape. Notice the mirror on the wall in this scene ~ it shows Gloria RUNNING to the door. But, she was already AT the door in the previous scene!!!

When Greer places the floor plan of the tunnel on the table, the paper is on an angle to the stripes on the tablecloth. In the close-up shot of the floor plan, the paper is perpendicular to the stripes. In this close-up shot,  Greer is pointing with his right hand on the paper. A split-second later, he's smoking a cigarette with this hand. While talking to Harry Wong in the restaurant, Greer says: "Enough to you start you  and this niece of his, off right." (Thanks to Guy Chiapparino)

After eyeing the dust on Harry Wong's tie, Clark "swipe-steals" a sample which he shows seconds later to Inspector Henderson.  What Clark took and what he shows don't jive.  (Jimmy Barnes)

21. THE HUMAN BOMB
An observation: As the episode unfolds, we see Butler reading the 'Daily Planet' with the big headline:

SUPERMAN WAGES WAR AGAINST CRIME

This same paper was used again in #24 - "Crime Wave".

At the beginning, when Butler is talking about controlling Superman, the camera dollies in on him and you can hear the 'crank' of the Boom Mike. (thanks to Colin Duff).

In my old ("Kellogg's") 'film' print of this show, we see the shadow of a Boom Mike on the wall; near the ceiling ~ just after Jimmy leaves Lois's Office to get the Chief. (In the 'tighter-cropped' NICK/Columbia House version, this mike is not seen).

As Butler is ready to walk out onto the ledge with Lois in tow, his right foot stumbles against the window sill...!! (He was looking back at Lois and didn't lift his foot high enough over the sill).

Another observation: As Clark makes an excuse to leave and change to Superman, he proclaims, "I don't want any part of it. I'm leaving!!!". We next see him outside of Lois's office; closing her door, removing his hat and entering the Store Room. It was THIS scene that was consistently used in the B&W years as 'stock footage' (usually ~ but not always!! ~ eliminating the sound of the 'closing door').

As Butler's 2 crooks are trying to take off in their car (that Superman is holding from the rear), as the 'big' crook says "The wheels are spinnin' - can't you hear them??"; the 'little' crook mouths these same words!!

Watch as Jimmy walks on the ledge; on his way to confront "Bet-A-Million Butler" (carrying that 'niblick' or whatever it is). One time the camera cuts to the traffic on the street ~ you'll see the cars moving BACKWARDS!! (thanks to Bill McCarthy).

"The Human Bomb."  On the ledge outside the office window when "bet-a-million-Butler" and Lois are handcuffed together, she decides to remove her shoes for safer footing.  The camera zooms in as she kicks her shoes off one at a time, but both times it's her left foot.  (Bill W.)

22. CZAR OF THE UNDERWORLD
The desk lamp in Kent's office shatters just BEFORE the rifle fires!! (Dave Orbach adds: "In fact, this desk lamp is pulled down by the electrical cord by someone out of camera range").

A "National Studios" sign on the car door disappears by the time Ollie, Kent and Henderson get back to this car.

When Kent and the Security Chief (aka: Frank Dinelli) are seated in the trailer, the Chief is supposed to hear someone outside the trailer and begin writing a tip-off note to Kent during the course of a couple of lines of dialogue. At the end of his second line, he shows Kent the note. Trouble was, actor John Maxwell did not start writing when the lines started. He waited until about 2 seconds before the end of his last line before he began writing. He then showed Kent a note that was a full sentence of words!! (thanks to Tim "TJ" James).

Superman bangs Dinelli's (actually the dummy's) head on the brick wall; after landing back at the studio.

"Czar of the Underworld" - In the scene where the police chief and Clark are in the trailer (which is obviously a set), the door is solid with no window or curtains.  When we see the real trailer on the soundstage, the interior of the door has a window and curtains.  (William Bailey)

When the episode begins, we see daytime stock footage of the Daily Planet; however, the scenes with Clark, Henderson and Luigi's gunmen appear to be at night.  In addition, it must have been very late at night because when Luigi calls Clark, it's also nighttime in California.  (Gary Labrum)

What kind of police work is this ?  After an assassin attempts to shoot Clark Kent, him & Inspector Henderson are “too busy” to investigate, or at least attempt to find out who tried to shoot him from a nearby building ?  It’s more of a screenplay issue than a blooper. (John M. Rico)

In "Czar of the Underworld," Kent and Henderson's airplane en route to Hollywood is a United Airlines plane (with the film flipped from the shot from "The Monkey Mystery") for part of the flight, and a Pan American plane in the next shot.  (Changing planes for a connecting flight is one thing - but changing airlines?) --Jody McGhee

23. GHOST WOLF
Garvin's voice on the telephone to Perry is NOT that of Stanley Andrews!! It's higher pitched; with a slight 'southern' drawl.

When we see the many (stock footage) scenes of men in the woods, we see 2 men with a double-handled saw; cutting thru a huge tree trunk. However, the men are actually sawing FASTER than the sound effects that are dubbed in!!

An inconsistency: In Perry's Office, he's telling his plans to Lois, Clark and Jimmy. In a shot showing all 4 of them, Clark is leaning down on Lois's chair; then he stands up straight and puts his hands into his pockets. When it cuts to the next scene (showing just Clark and Lois), Clark is shown AGAIN leaning on Lois's chair and again stands up; as he says, "What do you want us to do, Chief??" (He had already stood up ~ he shouldn't have been filmed leaning on her chair again).

As Clark stands on the back of the Train; seeing the sawed Tressle ready to fall, he says, "Great Scott!!"; prior to changing to Supe. During this scene, he casts TWO shadows onto the Train!?!? (We see this in a few other scenes, too).

Just after the "wolf" first scares Lois in her cabin, we see a Band-Aid on Clark's RIGHT pinkie finger.

During the forest fire, we see many scenes of chaos. We also HEAR the 'wonk on the head' audio clip in the midst of all this ----- for no apparent reason!! (It's the SAME 'wonk' that we hear when Olivier knocks out Garvin a few minutes later).

As Superman lands into the fire during all this, we hear NO landing sound. We do hear it about 5 seconds later!

NOTE: the above TWO errors are seen in the "Kellogg's" edit of this episode. (I believe they were both correct in the "Maxwell" edit).

Garvin refers to Jacque Olivier as "OLIVI - AYE" and "OLIVI - AIR"....!!!

(There are MANY editing differences in the "Kellogg's" vs. the "Maxwell" edits of this show. I'll list these and others on another page later).

From John M. Rico:

   1)  When Superman holds up the train trestle to support the bridge & train, the fabric backdrop appears to be a very poor quality in the background; you can actually see a couple of large wrinkles or flaws in it.  Seconds later, when the train crosses the bridge, you can see a very dark object, like the rectangular outline of some debris, at the top of the screen for a few seconds.

   2)  After his last lumberjack defects, when Garvin walks over to the telephone to phone Perry White for the second time, you can see a very large moving shadow on the left wall from the cameraman or his equipment. (Thanks John)

24. CRIME WAVE
Two separate Daily Planet papers with these headlines...

"Superman Wages War Against Crime"

"Superman Invades Crime Underworld"

...yet, both have this same article underneath:

"State-Wide Road Blocks Set Up".

Notice the right of Superman's "S" emblem in many scenes in this episode: there are 2 areas where the stitching is 'unraveling' on the outer edges...!?!?

In this episode (and others), we see what is the Metropolis Police car.  It is that Nash that we saw so many times during that time.  The car is black and white and obviously a Police car; but, nowhere on the car does it SAY "Police"....!!!

We see Lois getting in her little Convertible and attempting to drive away......... but cannot. Then she grimaces and sees what she did wrong and puts it in gear.  And, at NO time did she look to see if there was any traffic before she pulls away.

Those films that Sally took (which were really 'stock shots') look way too professional to have been taken with an 8mm camera that had no Zoom or Turrent lens.  On the close-ups of Lois getting in her car, for example, Sally would have to have been about 6 feet away to take that and Lois would have seen her!!

An observation: the newspaper (from "Mystery In Wax") ~ saying "Dr. John Hurley Leaps Into Metropolis Harbor" ~ can be seen at the beginning of this show.

Another 'laugher' is that "complicated control panel" that the Professor has on the wall.  When Superman rips it off the wall, there is only one small wire attached that supposedly controls all those functions....!!! (thanks to Tom Chenevert for the above 7 bloopers).

Another observation: When the "#1 Crime Boss" is seen entering the darkened room (to watch Sally's home movies), the room was NOT quite dark enough. You can clearly see he is Walter Canby (John Eldredge).

After viewing the Warehouse fire scenes in this movie, Nick says, "You like fires, Ed??" Ed replies, "Yeah, I love 'em" --- but, he appears to continue talking AFTER his dialogue is over......!?

As Sally is showing the films she took of the members of the Planet staff, the projector stops and starts between each shot. It has been mentioned that the shots were way too slick for an 8mm job --- and they are. They include cutaways and close-ups that she could never have taken. But, one of the shots she projects on the screen is a shot of.......... the screen she is projecting the films on!!! I think Al Joseph must have had one too many martinis' at lunch before he cut that portion of the episode. (thanks to Tim "TJ" James).

When Superman shows the criminals that he could break out of the room any time he wanted to, you can clearly see that there is some sort of break-away 'hole' where he punches through the door. (thanks to Brad Cressley).

Another voice-synching issue: at the beginning, as the “newsie” is passing out newspapers (EXTRA-EXTRA read all about it !), his lips are not following the dialogue accurately. (John M. Rico)

25. THE UNKNOWN PEOPLE, PT. 1
Notice when the little girl rolls the ball with the Mole Men, she states, "Why, it's getting prettier" (referring to the glowing ball). But, as she SAYS this, the ball has NOT yet begun to glow....!!

When Supe first confronts and lifts up Luke, you can tell that Jeff Corey was stepping down from some 'box' that helped elevate him; as Supe sets him down.

26. THE UNKNOWN PEOPLE, PT. 2
An observation: Watch the scenes in the woods; as the Mole Men are atop the Dam. When Superman lands, takes off and catches the falling Mole Man, these stunts were ALL done by George Fisher, NOT George Reeves. (use your 'slow-motion').

Eddie shoots a hole in the window of the Shack where the frightened Mole Man hides. The ONLY time you can even tell there's actually 'glass' there is when you see the bullet go through. And, scenes after the gun shot show no hole..!?

Watch as Lois is grabbed by the angry street mob. She begins to kick the man on our left, but the scene quickly switches to Supe and Luke for a few lines of dialogue. It cuts back to the SAME scene of Lois kicking this same guy; as well as the other guy holding her, too. (A sloppy case of editing....).

A 'continuity' error: As Luke is first zapped by the Ray Gun (distant shot), we see him getting pushed back against the wall. The NEXT scene (close-up) still shows him out from the wall and THEN getting pushed back...!?

The oil well seen being destroyed in the end looks nothing like ANY well we see in the episode. It also appears to be in more of a very barren or a 'Desert'-like setting.
