The Fourth Season (1955)

Episodes #66 - #78

66. JOEY
At the end of the Horse Race, notice the "grandstands" that both the Daily Planet staff (plus Alice) and Luke Palmer and his cronie are sitting in ------- they are the SAME set!!! Look at the very top board or slat; at the back wall: towards the left side are 2 dark 'notches' that are missing from BOTH slats in the (supposedly) different grandstand areas......!!

67. THE UNLUCKY NUMBER

There are no BLOOPERS recorded for this episode!

68. THE BIG FREEZE
An observation: Why is it that after going into Ol' Doc Watts' freeze chamber, Superman emerges totally white --- except for his belt buckle!?!? Now, if it's cold enough to turn the Man of Steel into a snowman, why wouldn't the belt buckle also "frost" up?? (thanks to Jeff 'Mondo' Minich).

After Superman has become frosted and numbed and after rejecting Lois' suggestion that Jimmy stay to help the helpless Man of Steel, Superman puts his hands on both Lois and Jimmy and tells them to run along.  The problem is, he is so cold that his touch could easily cause death or injury to them. (R. Steven Smith)

69. PERIL BY SEA
Not an 'error', but look at the newspaper on new Editor Kent's desk; as he chastises Jimmy .... it's the "Phantom Burglar Strikes Twice" paper; from "The Man Who Could Read Minds" ~ 1953. (this upside-down newspaper is more noticeable or readable in older 'film' prints; where the cropping wasn't so tight at the bottom). (thanks in part to John Field for this).

Also, at the beginning of this same scene, Clark tosses this paper onto his (Perry's) desk; just prior to saying "How could you do it, Jimmy??". In the 'distant' shots, the paper is crooked on the desk ~ just as he tossed it. However, when we see Clark straight-on from the front, this paper is now perfectly straight on the desk!! (It remains crooked in ALL 'distant' shots during this entire scene, too).

Notice right after Jimmy calls White "Chief" and Perry exclaims how good that felt, Jimmy is standing almost nose to nose with Perry. In the next scene, he is a good 7 or 8 feet away; behind the coffee table....!? (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

And, Superman's dive into the water is the same (albeit badly-colorized) scene that was used in The Golden Vulture; from 1953.

When Inspector Henderson arrives to chastise Jimmy for writing the article that revealed what Perry was working on the guard tries to call the house and states there was no answer, but he did not give any time for anyone to possibly get to the phone to do so!  (SuPeRHaRRy)

70. TOPSY-TURVY
At the beginning; when Superman lands on top of the flag pole, shouldn't the scene upon Superman's arrival been upside down --- since the flag pole sitter still believed he was upside down at the time??? When actor Ben Welden entered Clark's office while it was upside down, he entered the scene upside down, and at the end, when Superman landed in the tent, he also entered the scene upside down. It should follow that at the time of Superman's arrival at the flag pole, the scene should have been upside down. (thanks to Charles Kim).

When White tells Kent to call Professor Pepperwinkle's home; to see if Lois and Jimmy are there, Kent dials the number from memory --- he doesn't have to look it up. How does he know this number by heart? He hadn't seen Pepperwinkle for some time. (thanks to Peter Nardelli).

An observation: Also, when Kent calls Pepperwinkle's home, he lets the phone ring only twice, then hangs up. Does this mean no one is home? Pepperwinkle is old and it would take him some time to get to the phone. (thanks to Peter Nardelli).

Just before 10:32 AM (when Professor Pepperwinkle's machine is supposed to go off; to aid in the Bank heist), Jimmy and Lois show up at the Carnival. Jimmy shouts out, "Professor; Professor PERRYwinkle".......!!!

As "Carny" is eluding the mighty Metropolis Police force in his car, we see a 'distant' shot of Henderson's car turn a corner in pursuit. Henderson and the Officer driving are app. 2½ feet apart in the car. When it cuts to a 'close-up' of them, they are virtually side-by-side; almost touching shoulders!!

Henderson gets a call in his Office and rushes off; as Clark stays behind to "make a phone call" (ie: change to Superman). However, when Supe takes off out the office window, we're treated to the same old stock footage shot of him leaving the Daily Planet Store Room window!!

A question: In the tent, the crooks are counting their money when Pepperwinkle activates the machine. How could the crooks NOT hear the machine being turned on by Pepperwinkle --- even WITH Jimmy coughing? It is very audible and much louder than the coughing. (thanks to Peter Nardelli).

When Superman arrives at the tent while it is upside down, he pushes Lois, Jimmy and Pepperwinkle out of the way; towards the rear of the tent. While the crooks are shooting at him, the machine reverses everything immediately. Pepperwinkle has no time to reverse the machine and set the marble to roll down the track again to turn everyone right side up. You can see it clearly. Pepperwinkle does NOT reverse the machine. (thanks to Peter Nardelli).

71. JIMMY THE KID
In Gridley's Office; where we first meet 'Kid Collins', his Hat appears lower on his head --- in the shot with all 4 actors. In the scenes with just Collins and Gridley, it appears higher.

The supposed 'double' of Jack Larson (whom we just see from behind) looks NOTHING like him!!!!

When Gridley shows Collins the Photo/Bio papers of Perry, Lois and Clark, notice that the photo of Clark shows him with a BLACK suit on.....!!! Now, when did Clark ever wear a Black Suit????

A 'continuity' error: When Collins first comes off the elevator in the Planet and runs into Lois, her hands with the File Folder are held upwards; near her stomach. There's a quick camera cut that NOW shows her arms DOWN; with one hand folded over the other....!?

Another 'continuity' error: White barks at "Jimmy" (Collins) in the City Room; for having his feet on the desk, Collins says, "Watch it, Dad!!" and the cigar in his right hand is down at his side. A quick camera cut to White saying, "What did you say, Olsen??". The cigar Collins holds is now held up near his chest....!?

Clark phones in the 'exciting' account of how Superman put out the Forest Fire to Collins. In the phone booth, Clark's Hat casts not one..... not two..... but, THREE shadows!!!!

As Collins fumbles with Clark's Apartment door lock, Mrs. Cooper comes out from the room across the hall and JUST HAPPENS to have the key to Clark's door right there in her hand!!!

As Macey unties Jimmy from the chair (thinking he's Kid Collins), you can see that she needn't have wasted her time. He had already slipped out of the rope; yet she continued to untie it anyways!?!?

When Olsen is being untied and he calls Macey "Baby", notice the change in distance they are from one another from one scene to the next. (thanks to Michael R. Cozzi).

After Macey unties Jimmy, he starts to leave; but doesn't have all his clothes. Macey says his Top Coat is 'down in the car; in front of the building' and Jimmy hurriedly leaves. Now, how did Jimmy know which car she meant???

When Gridley and his 2 goons see Jimmy in the Alley (again, thinking he's Collins), notice the distant shot; where Jimmy stops for a second. The street or pavement ALL appears to be "flat". Yet, when it cuts to a close-up of Jimmy, he adjusts his jacket and, as he starts to walk towards them, he very noticeably STEPS DOWN --- as if stepping off a CURB......!?!? (NOTE: this same Alley is seen several times in the 'color' years; most notably in "The Big Freeze" and "Topsy-Turvy").

When Supe flies into Perry's Office near the end, he also exits this Office --- out the Store Room window......!? (obviously a 'stock footage' take-off).

An observation: As in 1953's "Panic In The Sky", just how did Clark happen to have TWO 'Superman' Costumes!?!? (His Mother gave him only ONE at the 'Smallville Bus Depot'; in the series opening episode).

Another observation: The whole episode happens at night, but the flying sequences of Superman are in the DAY!! (thanks to Thomas Boud).

72. THE GIRL WHO HIRED SUPERMAN

There are no BLOOPERS recorded for this episode!

73. THE WEDDING OF SUPERMAN
More of an inconsistency here: At the beginning when Lois leaves her office to see Mr. White, she turns LEFT around the corner from her office and walks straight towards Mr. White's office; passing the Store Room on her right. However, when Clark goes to see Lois from the Store Room, he walks straight out the door and past Mr. White's office; on his right. He should have turned LEFT out of the Store Room ----- or else he decided to take a longer route. And even if he did decide to take a longer route, he should have approached Lois' office turning left into the office; instead of turning right!!! (thanks to Charles Kim). (This may sound confusing, but Charles is correct. Check out your video; as I did).

When Superman is in the jewelry store rescuing Lois, he holds the bomb as it explodes. The wall behind him suddenly has a hole in it mini seconds BEFORE the bomb goes off. (thanks Susan Schnitzer)

74. DAGGER ISLAND
After inhaling all the gas in Lois's office, Superman leaves by jumping out of the Store Room window ---- which we see him fly back INTO a few seconds later!!

In the scene where we see water coming out of the hole Superman dug, look in the bottom right corner and there is a shadow of a hand.

When Superman heats the cannon ball Jeff is holding, he drops it and starts to run away from the ruins of the bunker Jimmy is in. But, in the NEXT scene, he is still standing there....!?

Also, take a look at the beginning; when Clark comes into the Office: his lines start as he is standing by the Office door and then, in the SAME conversation, he is now standing between one of the Craymore heirs and Lois!! (thanks to Rick Swader for all the above #74 'Bloopers').

When Superman jumps into the well and punches a hole in the stone wall to look for water, he is still wearing Clark's pinkie ring on his left hand.  (William Bailey)

75. BLACKMAIL
When Eddie and Arnold are talking in the Bomb Shelter, Arnold tells Eddie the heat will be off "As soon as I figure a way to get a certain evidence file from our pal, Inspector Henderson". He THEN says, "That file could send us up for life; if he ever gets his hands on it"  (Does the Inspector have it ....... or doesn't he???) (thanks to Rick Swader).

76. THE DEADLY ROCK

There are no BLOOPERS recorded for this episode!

77. THE PHANTOM RING
When Lois and Jimmy are taken captive by an invisible man, notice the gun as the invisible man reveals it from his pocket ---- the barrel of the gun is pointed away from Lois and Jimmy; as if his back were facing them!!! (thanks to Charles Kim).

In # 77. THE PHANTOM RING (end of season 4), when Kent is flying the airplane and is knocked out when the crook hits him over the head with a gun, why isn't the gun at least dented or bent where it hit him ? Thanks again for the absolutely great website with all the extra information.

Dovey Siberian

78. THE JOLLY ROGER
When we first see Tyler and Riffles, they stand with Riffles on the left and Tyler on the right. In the next close-up shot, their positions are inexplicably reversed.....!?

We see the Pirates digging around the Mine on the beach.......and we hear the sound of a wooden stage floor under the sand as they dig!!

A question: Why didn't Tyler and Riffles even question why the Mine they were gonna trigger (by Lois, Jimmy and Kent) all of a sudden went flying thru the air; into the waters!? Didn't they wonder HOW that happened.....!?!

If you watch real close as the pirates attack Superman, a sword breaks over Superman's chest and is flung behind at a fairly rapid speed; hitting Jack Larson. (thanks to Lou Koza).

Superman's take-offs from both the Island and the Ship had a wooden "thump"; just as George 'took off'.

As in various episodes, this one contained 3 scenes of Supe flying in reversed footage --- his "S" was backwards!!

In the end, Perry throws a book at a fleeing Jimmy. The book takes MUCH too long to reach the door. Jimmy even had time to open the door, leave and close the door before the book hits......!!!
