The Fifth Season (1956)

Episodes #79 - #91

79. PERIL IN PARIS
When Jimmy and Clark are first seen with Inspector Lanier, they are standing a foot or two apart. In the 'close-up' scenes, they are literally touching shoulders!!

An observation: When Superman first meets Anna Constantine, he asks her, "Are we alone??" Couldn't he have just surveyed the place with his X-Ray eyes??

When Supe takes off from this meeting with Anna and Gregor, we hear the reversed audio of a LANDING!!!

When Ducray first meets Superman in his shop, he locks the door, walks over by the counter and...... looks down for his "mark" on the sound-stage floor; before stopping!!!

Supe crashes thru yet another wall at the end. First, covered in dust --- then, NO dust.

As he stands there with Jimmy, Ducray and Anna, his hair is kinda ruffled and unkempt; from his wall crash. But, when the camera cuts to his close-up/eye-wink at the very end, his hair is now very neatly combed......!!

80. TIN HERO

As painful as it was, I watched Tin Hero (LOL)  In the scene just after Frank Smullens leaves Perry White's office to save his best girl Cecilia, I think George Reeves flubs a line. It sounds like Clark was either supposed to say:

"...I have one of those feelings that something's going to happen..."OR
"...I have one of those feelings that something's gonna happen..."

Well, there is something happening...it's where George is saying the "gonna" or "going to" part of the line. (thank you Mike Goldman)

81. MONEY TO BURN
There are two scenes which show Clark leaving Perry White's office with his Hat in his hand. When he leaves the office, the Hat is nowhere to be seen!! (Another example of bad editing of stock footage). The first scene is at the time Clark reads the note, 'Planet warehouse on fire, take over.' The second scene is at the time Clark is searching for Perry and says 'safest surroundings possible.' In both scenes, Clark rushes out of Perry's office to change into Superman. (thanks to Charles Kim).

John Hamilton is seen near the beginning actually reading his script on his Office desk!! (thanks to Jan Rekas).

A 'continuity' observation: When Perry, Lois and Jimmy rush off to the Planet Warehouse fire, they are seen arriving seconds later (in screen time). However, when Superman leaves for this same fire, it takes him a few minutes of screen time to get there.....!?!?

And, as Superman is seen flying to this nightime fire, he is shown in daytime (stock) flying footage!!

When Superman is shown dosing the flames of the Planet Warehouse fire, the "water" coming out of the fire hose appears to be more like "steam"......!!!!

When Perry is in the "Firemen's Friends" truck; lighting a match to the fire-proof suit, the crooks slam the door on him ---- yet he still casts a shadow on the wall ------- of a darkened truck!!! And, not just one shadow; but TWO!!!

Another observation: you'll notice that; while they're driving their truck, 'Slim" and his pal wear the exact SAME clothes on TWO different days!!

On my older (higher-cropped) "film" print of this episode, when all 4 regulars are gathered in Perry's Office at night near the end, you can see a very noticeable "crease" or "wrinkle" at the top of the (painted) backdrop outside ---- behind those corrugated panels. The more tightly-cropped "NICK" print eliminates this "wrinkle".

82. THE TOWN THAT WASN'T

In The Town That Wasn't, which is a color episode that I actually enjoy, I think this would qualify. In the scene where Clark, Jimmy and Inspector Henderson are taken prisoner, Jack Larson is not looking where he is going, and bangs into the door frame of the jail cell. (thank you Mike Goldman)

83. THE TOMB OF ZAHARAN
"Zaharan" is pronounced as both Zaha-RAN and Zaha-RAHN.

In the Metropolis Airport scenes, we see a woman in a dark Hat with a red/orange 'ribbon' on it; carrying her coat. She is seen coming thru the doors; debarking the plane. She is also seen in the latter 'loading' scenes ---- this time with her coat on, too!! (a busy traveller!!).

There is a close up of Clark's face; followed by the usual "X-Ray" vision shot of just his eyes; as he looks in the crooks' coat in the Airport. There is a marked difference between the 'close-up' (round) glasses and his regular, more rectangular glasses in this episode. (The round glasses are 'stock footage'; from 1954).

An observation: During this same scene, listen closely to the background 'suspense' music. It lasts a couple of seconds, but it's the music from the 1951 episodes; with Phyllis Coates. They never played that suspense music in the later "Noel" stories. (see #87 below, too). (thanks to Philip Pitta).

As Superman crashes thru the Airport wall, he's covered in dust. The next scene ----- dust all gone!!

As Lois pounds on the huge, granite-type door of the Tomb (hoping to have it opened), you can hear this door is hollow!!

When Superman lands and lifts this door off the Tomb, we see the Incense fumes escaping from the opening. However, the next scene of him inside, we see the actual fumes are ONLY by Jimmy and Lois ------- nowhere near the door opening!!

84. THE MAN WHO MADE DREAMS COME TRUE

There are no BLOOPERS recorded for this episode!

85. DISAPPEARING LOIS

There are no BLOOPERS recorded for this episode!

86. CLOSE SHAVE
Notice Rick's tie when he's first seated in Tony's chair. In some scenes, it hangs down fairly straight and in others, the 'shorter' piece in back sticks out quite a bit to our left.

A question: Jimmy asks Tony if there's a 'Restaurant handy??'; as he waits for his haircut. Now, Jimmy lives in Metropolis. Would he REALLY have to ask Tony where a nearby Restaurant is.......!?

Another question: Superman heats up the crook's gun; as they try to kidnap Lois. One of them says, "He must've done it with his X-Ray vision". Wouldn't he have used his HEAT vision --- more so than his X-Ray vision??

Notice the position of the ropes on Tony; when he, Lois and Jimmy are tied up in Rick's kitchen. They vary from being closer to his stomach in some scenes and are higher in others. (You can tell by how they're positioned near his tie).

When Rick tries to get Tony to 'hypnotize' the gun-wielding Mickey, Tony (Richard Benedict) very noticeably flubs his "Look at his hands..." line!!

Mickey finally leaves Rick's kitchen; while the bomb ticks away. He very casually walks out the door and we even hear his normal-paced footsteps. Yet, Rick immediately re-enters and says (something like), "He went by me so fast, he didn't even see me......". Didn't even see him....!?!? In fact, their shadows almost 'overlapped' on the Hallway wall.....!!!

Watch as Trigger and Mickey re-enter the kitchen at the end. They both appear to look at the (sound stage) floor for their camera 'marks' or positions. (Especially obvious with Trigger!!).

87. THE PHONY ALIBI
At the beginning; when Inspector Henderson tips off Clark of a robbery pulled off by a member of Ed Crowley's gang, Clark leaves his office and grabs his Hat off his desk. However, as he leaves the office, the Hat is nowhere to be seen; when he enters the Store Room to change into Superman. (thanks to Charles Kim).

Another observation: As Clippy Jones materializes from the telephone lines; into his buddy Moe's place, we hear a snippet of 1951 background music!! (thanks to Philip Pitta).

In episode # 87, The Phony Alibi, In Kent's office Jimmy reads the phone # of Professor Pepperwinkle to her from the phone book, "Greenleaf 8975", but she only dials 4 numbers while we watch.  This is about 20 minutes into the episode (Dovian Siberian)

88. THE PRINCE ALBERT COAT
Grandpa Jackson, that devout Confederate, mentions the "Battle of Bull Run"..... which is what the Union Army called it!! Among southerners, it's called the "Battle of First Manassas." (thanks to Michael J. Hayde).

89. THE STOLEN ELEPHANT
When Johnny is first showing "Susie" to his Mom, he mentions about how big she'll grow to be. That is followed by a close-up shot of his Mom saying, "I can hardly wait!!". In this shot, her LEFT collar is turned noticeably upwards. It's straightened out in the rest of her scenes!!

When Mr. Haley enters Clark's Office, Clark is seen reading his Newspaper upside-down!!!

In their 'hide-out', Busher and Spike talk about the $10,000.00 they're going to get (for Susie's ransom). Spike says "Ten thousand GRAND; right at our doorstep!!". (He should have said just "TEN grand"!! 'Ten thousand grand' is TEN MILLION dollars!!).

When Superman lands after following the Guided Missile, it sure looks like the background scenery (a painting) moves!! (thanks to Gary L.).

When the trailer backs into frame in "The Stolen Elephant," you can clearly see the shadows of crew members actually pushing the trailer.  (Thanks to John Sheridan for the blooper and to Mr. X for the photo)

(NOTE: It appears to me that; aside from a slight 're-dressing' of the doorway area, the Farm house Kitchen used in this episode is the SAME set that was used in "The Prince Albert Coat" ----- the previous episode).

90. MR. ZERO
An observation: When Kent and the Chief are engaged in their opening lines of dialogue, John Hamilton NEVER looks up from his desk at Kent; as he says all his lines (until the scene is almost over) --- even though Clark looks at him at times. He continues to look down on his desk ....... perhaps reading from his Script?? (I've read where Hamilton had done this before ~ especially in the later years ~ as he was prone to forgetting his lines).

When 'Zero', Georgie and Slouchy are in Georgie's hideaway, Slouchy holds his Cigar in his LEFT hand throughout ------- until the very last scene; where it suddenly is switched to his RIGHT hand....!?

When Georgie Gleep enters both the clothing store and bank, he puts his hand right through the door; where the glass should be! (Why should banks in Metropolis need solid doors when they have Superman?) (thanks to Gary L.).

Near the end, Clark sends Jimmy and 'Zero' to Georgie's hideaway; where they are to meet Superman there. He then tells Lois, "Call Inspector Henderson and tell him to get over there right away with some of his best men!!" George stumbles over this line BIG time!! He speaks so fast that especially the middle of this line is 'blurred' together. (check it out).

Another observation: (nit-picky; ain't I....!?) Jimmy and 'Zero' leave Clark's Office; just before he changes to Superman and flies out the "D.P." window. Supe flies for about 10 seconds or so, lands and crashes through the wall in Georgie's hideaway. BUT, after only a few lines of dialogue are said, he lets 'Zero' come through the hole in the wall and 'freeze' Georgie and Slouchy. ALL of this takes place in ONE minute of screen time. Now ......... how on Earth did Jimmy and 'Zero' get there as fast as Superman....!?!? In ONE minute???

91. WHATEVER GOES UP

Near the end of the show, Major Osborne arrives at Perry White's office to join Clark Kent and Perry White. When the Major enters the room he closes the office door shut. When Clark Kent sneaks away to become Superman notice that the door is ajar, giving Clark Kent an easy and quiet way to leave. How is this possible since the Major
closed the door tightly and no one else entered or left Perry White's office. (Thank you, Bill McCarthy)

Lois and Jimmy dilute the anti-gravity fluid with water. They throw it to Gannis (Milton Frome) It explodes, and Milton Frome says, "This time it's the whole suit!" It seems to me that the explosion would have done more than just wreck his suit. It would have killed him!! (Len Schmidt)
